Living a green lifestyle is a big part of our household. We slowly started our journey over 5 years ago. Every year I find new ways to improve our green routine. While I love being able to show my kids how to make green choices, I love that there are many budget-friendly ways to do it. Repurposing is one of my favorite ways to brighten our green routine around the home. Before buying new, I search around the house to see what I can do to give something a new purpose. Read on to see how sulfate free all® fresh clean ESSENTIALS® and AVEENO PURE RENEWAL® Shampoo and Conditioner {found at Walmart} inspired me to brighten our green routine in the laundry room and bathroom with this shabby chic tutorial.

We bought our first home last year! It has been an exciting way to find new ways to improve our green routine in a more permanent way since we are no longer renters. We bought my childhood home that is a gorgeous 1915 victorian. Currently, we are trying to update the home to make it feel like ours. With each change though, I am trying to keep parts that I love and find ways to repurpose remnants elsewhere in the home. One of the ways we are doing this is my painting the outdated wood rather than replacing cabinets or furniture. I am using the same principle with our green household supplies. I work hard and do research to find products that are quality and avoid waste. We can avoid waste by making sure products meet our needs like all® fresh clean ESSENTIALS® and AVEENO PURE RENEWAL® Shampoo and Conditioner do for us!

It is not always easy managing a green household with 3 boys. They play hard so I need a laundry detergent that is effective at deep cleaning and stain lifting to keep up with them. NEW sulfate free all® fresh clean ESSENTIALS® delivers a powerful clean without harshness is a great solution for us. It is an added bonus that it is dye free and the fresh clean scent lingers without being overpowering.

Now onto our shabby chic repurposing project…

We live in a society where it is easy to be disposable. It is not good for our environment or budget to just trash and replace. For example, there is nothing wrong with the bathroom vanity. It just isn’t my taste nor does it fit the theme of our master suite remodel. I am excited to show you how with a little bit of paint and time how I can transform outdated wood into something gorgeous!

Pick your Colors first. I used a vibrant jade as the green accent color and sheepskin for the overall color. I have used navy blue as an accent with great results as well. We are painting the walls a bright green color. I decided with bright walls that I could paint all my furniture with a neutral color to help them look coordinated despite the fact that they are not matching furniture pieces.

Next step I suggest removing vanity (or other project piece) hardware such as knobs, etc… that you don’t want to get paint on. Paint on hardware is a quick way to draw away from the quality of your hard work. Then remove any drawers or doors for easier painting on furniture base. My drawers were not easy to remove so I just moved them out to get a better base coat around the drawers.

Shabby chic painting is my favorite way to go since it is difficult to mess up. You want a distressed look so streaky helps show that accent color while making it look intentional. I have tried several techniques to get the look. My favorite way is with some chalk paint (for the accent color I just used some paint I have around the house) and a paint brush. Put the bold accent color on decorative edges or areas that you want a brighter look. Allow to dry.

Then paint with base color. Repeat base color until you achieve the desired look. The paintbrush shown below is my favorite to achieve the look that I want.

I reattached the hardware and doors that I had removed to complete the project. The bathroom vanity looks just as I planned. Next step for the bathroom is to remove the wallpaper and get the walls painted.

I applied a similar technique to a removed kitchen cabinet door for our laundry room project! I love those lost sock signs that people are buying or making. I decided since I had some leftover kitchen cabinet doors that I would make a bigger version that would be more effective for our family size.

The laundry room is my most active and dreaded room in the house. It has white concrete walls with exposed plumbing and wires. It still has some more work needed but I wanted an inviting space in the laundry room. The best part about repurposing is that you can be flexible to make decisions as you go along. Painting the walls isn’t really an option with all the pipes. However, I switched up my usual white wash sign by applying the same technique around the edges with a color. The color accents help to frame the Lost Sock sign so it doesn’t just blend into the white walls. I used leftover paint from our bathroom (light green) and nautical blue to accent the Lost Sock Board.

After allowing any additional coats of paint to dry,  get ready to make the letters. Some people like hand painting. I am too much of a perfectionist so I prefer stencils.

Next steps after stenciling on Lost Socks Seeking Mates

  • Reattach hardware
  • Decide on clothespin placement then hot glue them. I did 4 clothespins per line.
  • Once hot glue is dry, thread jewelry wire (or something similar) through the metal ring on clothespin so it doesn’t slide.
  • On the ends place decorative nail tack and wrap the wire around the nail. Then clip excess wire.
    • I choose the decorative nail but you can use something more basic that you have around the house.
  • Repeat for another “laundry line”.

I still have some work to do in the laundry room but I am pleased with my brightened laundry station. It is amazing what a little paint can do!

You did an amazing job on the refinishes and both look spectacular. I’m having work done on my home right now but, I’m letting the experts handle it. I’m not very good at DIY.
