Growing up with migraines has been an obstacle I have worked for years to overcome. I was diagnosed with migraines when I was four years old. That means for 30 years I have been living with migraines. While there are moments that migraines interfered, I have been determined to power through migraines to keep living life. For me, the tough moments are when I am training for a family 5k or hike. It never fails that a migraine appears on the night before or day of an event. Keep reading to see how I use Excedrin®I bought at Walmart to keep me from missing out on making memories like my recent Red Rock Canyon Hike in Las Vegas.

This year has tested me on so many levels that I needed a break. I am the caregiver of 3 boys and my dad who was recently diagnosed with cancer. I booked a Red Rock Canyon Hike for my upcoming Las Vegas trip because sometimes I need to take a moment for myself.  I can’t allow migraines to stop me from taking care of me or those who rely on me. However, like clockwork, I started feeling a migraine the night before the big hike. I was already nervous since my last difficult hike was when I broke my hand. I could not let my head hurting interfere with what I have been looking forward to for months.

Since I was diagnosed with migraines at an early age, I have tried many prescriptions, at-home remedies, and over the counter options. When I was younger it was easier to take prescription remedies and sleep before I had kids. Once I had kids, though, I stopped using migraine remedies other than OTC options. I can’t be knocked out while taking care of 3 kids. However, I realized that paying attention to my triggers and taking Excedrin® Migraine as soon as I started experiencing symptoms that I could better manage my migraines. What I love about Excedrin Migraine is that it starts to relieve migraine pain in 30 minutes and it’s ranked #1 Neurologist Recommended OTC medicine for migraines {Symphony Health Solutions, 2016} Please keep in mind that before using Excedrin® Migraine (indicated for migraines) consult your doctor if you think you are suffering from migraines. And after a long day of being active and caring for those around me, Excedrin® PM also provides nighttime relief for tension headaches to let me sleep.

So how was the hike?

The red rock hike was an amazing experience that I needed to do to feel reconnected with my own strength. It was one of the most beautiful and challenging moments that I have experienced recently.

It was about 8 miles of rugged terrain complicated by flooded paths, ice and snow the higher we hiked. It was a journey filled with moments of self-doubt and awe. When it was all done, I was so proud of my accomplishment.

What are your migraine triggers?

Over the years, I noticed that my migraines were triggered by specific things. However dehydration is a reoccurring issue. Working out can lead to dehydration that makes me more likely to get a migraine. Working out is one of my favorite things to do, though. My trick is to make sure at the onset of a migraine that I find an icy way to rehydrate paired with using Excedrin® Migraine as directed on the bottle.

Natural Pineapple Lime Electrolyte Drink
  • 3 cups Coconut water
  • 1 cup water
  • 1.5 cup Pineapple juice
  • ¼ cup Lime Juice
  • ¼ tsp Himalayan sea salt (optional)
  • Popsicle & Icy Drink Add-in: Real pineapple chunks
  1. Combine coconut water, water, pineapple juice, lime juice, and salt in blender. If not freezing, just chill until ready to serve.
  2. If freezing, puree fresh pineapple.
  3. Stir puree pineapple into drink mix.
  4. Pour into popsicle molds or ice cube trays. Place in freezer until frozen. Store in freezer until ready to serve.
  5. ~~For frozen drink: put pineapple-lime electrolyte cubes in blender with a few tablespoons of liquid (juice, water, or coconut water (my preference)) to make smooth.

While this drink can be made in an instant without freezing, I prefer the make ahead option for when I am struggling to focus. I don’t know about you but when I have a migraine it affects my ability to focus.

For a good make ahead option: place pineapple-lime electrolyte drink in ice cube trays. Once frozen, put 6 cubes in each quart storage bag. Based off of my ice cube trays and popsicle molds, I was able to make 24 ice cubes (4 drinks) and 6 popsicles. The great thing about prepping ahead of time is when you have a migraine and cannot handle the sound of the blender someone else can make it. My husband can make it quickly without me having to explain how to make it.

This recipe is great for refreshing popsicles as well. Just stir in pureed pineapple before pouring into molds.

Now that I have shared how Excedrin® keeps migraines from ruining my moments whether it be special or just an average day. I would love to hear your tips to handle headaches!

Thank you for this recipe. I’ll have to try it. I get migraines off and on when stressed. However my 10 year old son has had them for years. Usually it’s if he missed a meal. I need to keep these in the freezer in case one starts up and see if they help.
