Making new family traditions

When we embark on something new such as gluten free living, I think part of the issues stem from past family traditions. We did not begin our gluten free journey until our first son was about 3 and our second was 9 mos. old. I am trying to recreate for the first what is familiar while trying to keep the other healthy; however, anyone on this journey is aware that is no small task. In the past, we would occasionally go out to eat for breakfast especially McDonald playgrounds. We tried to just get yogurt parfaits (without the granola of course) yet the contamination always occurred. These days we go pick up breakfast (mcdonald parfait, gluten free muffins, or donuts) and take it to one of the many parks. It has become a healthier tradition that we all can look forward to each week. Once we were able to address what all of our boys felt like they were missing out on, then we were able to modify our old traditions to fit our new life. As for the donuts, I highly reccommend … [Read more...]

The Good, the bad, & the Moldy Cookie

In the limited world of gluten free, why does it feel like customer service is a lost idea? I realize that poor customer service goes well beyond gluten free; however, I hate that with our few options either we are provided good quality or good customer service. Why can't we have both? An example of a company that goes above and beyond for us is Chipotle. While our eating out has decreased over the last few years, we are constantly reminded by Chipotle that successful gluten free restaurant visits are possible. Our local Chipotle acknowledges our needs and goes well beyond for us. The friendly employees change their gloves, get fresh lettuce/cheese, and are very cautious of the situation. Check out Chipotle if you haven't already. Then, there are those times a company knocks you down. We came home from the grocery store with a bag of new, homemade looking cookies that smelled so delicious. We saved them for dessert making a big deal about the special treat. When dessert arrived, we … [Read more...]

Giving Thanks

With Thanksgiving around the corner, I am giving thanks for the advances in the gluten free options. It amazes me how much has changed even in the past 3 years since we began eating gluten free. An example of changes I have noticed: More mainstream companies have realized the needs of the gluten free community. In the beginning, I never imagined I would be able to walk into a regular grocery store and find betty crocker dessert mixes , Bisquik, and more. However, with that being said, it doesn't mean the holidays are easier for those with food allergies or intolerances. Holidays are often surrounded by party after party of delicious usually gluten foods (or obvious chances of contamination). I think it is best to be prepared for these setbacks. The first Thanksgiving/Christmas after the diagnosis we spent at home. While it was great not worrying about anyone's health, the holidays are a time of family and friends. Since then I have vowed to not isolate our family, even if it … [Read more...]
